Astec and Maya art work

After Looking at Apocalypto I decided to look at Astec art work that would have been produced by the may civilization, around Mexico and the West Indian tribes of the Caribbean.

I thought that It could be worth me looking at art work that can give ideas for shape and pattern. This image on my bottom right really speaks to me for ideas. The real detail of pattern on the face. there is circular objects coming out of the ears earnings?

This image actually really inspires me for hair. The hat has squiggly like lines of it what if I shaped the hair some how in this shape. Maybe pinning the hair like this manipulating and piling each section of hair onto top of each other to create this kind of shape. Adding in hair extension's to really make the hair big.

Lest start with film shall we ?

Thought I would start of looking at the film Apoclaypto. This is one of my favorite films of all time. Its spoken
in another language so it really takes you in the virtual reality of tribal living. Based in Yucatan Mexico before the European settlers. Its a good source of inspiration for this project as the film travels through different ares of Mexico there fore seeing different tribes from different surroundings. The basic gist of the film is about a peaceful tribe living in the rain forest is attacked and taken in the middle of the night as slaves to be taken to the Maya Civilization. The young woman are raped, the men are killed or beaten. It also has a insight into the fact that these tribal people were very spiritual.

Wild Kingdom - Title

Hello :)
This blog is going to document research behind tribal fashion. Eventually this will inspire me to create two images (make up, fashion styling and hair) one look suitable for the catwalk and one for fashion editorial.

I already know that tribal patterns are really in fashion at the moment, what with sandal's, astec dresses, leggings, even jewelry such as ear cuffs, ear tunnels and ear stretchers.

It seem's to me that there a lot of inspiration from tribal culture that are influencing the youth trends. I know that some of the distinct connection's are the use of geometric shape, bold use of colour and the use of contrast with black block print.

Well I am really excited cant wait to get started... Hope my research pays off to create something really different. I already know I want to use a lot of colour. Note to self stay away from Astec design been and done !!! This whole project is about experimenting with ideas, fabrics, design and skill so I am going to use this idea to create something different...

Wish me luck x
